Many times I have heard people use this scripture, to try to back up their false doctrine, that salvation can be lost. When examining a doctrine one does not take it out of context and try to fudge it into a predisposed mind set. In determining a doctrinal position, one must examine ALL scriptures within their context and then, come to a conclusion.
Based upon the many scriptures which tell us that salvation is a free gift and not earned, how can we reconcile this verse. Let’s take a look shall we?
First of all where is this scripture located and what is the topic being discussed? We can see that it is in Matthew chapter 24, prior to the Jesus going to the cross. We can also see that he was talking about the end times. If we look at verse 9 we can see that Jesus is specifically talking about the Jews in the end times. He is not addressing the church which did not exist then, anyway. The rest of the chapter is also Jesus prophesying about the Jews in the latter days, not the church. He is telling the Jews to endure until all things are completed and then Messiah will come.
This chapter is not talking about the church; however for the sake of argument let us suppose that Jesus means the church too. How do we reconcile this with all the other chapters (read my prior blogs) that tell us salvation is a free gift, not earned by any works, and is given without repentance? Well, as I have shown you in prior blogs, to be really saved one must be born of God and in the Spirit, baptized in Christ and not just have an intellectual understanding about Jesus. If anyone is truly saved then God lives in them. Literally! The body of Christ is his temple. God lives in his people!
That being said, scriptures plainly tell us that those born of God are new creatures in Christ; the old man is dead, no longer existing! Therefore, the true Christian can never fall away. Who falls away? Who does not endure to the end? It is the APOSTATE. (False believer, the false shepherd, the cultist, carnal “Christian” or in other words the unsaved pretending to be saved but not really born again).
The Bible tells us that a good tree cannot bear bad fruit. If a person claiming to know God and lives in habitual sin and does not walk after God and be sold out to Jesus then that person is not saved and never was saved. Jesus says that “you shall know them by their fruit”
How can we know who is really saved and who is not? Well, in all honesty, only God truly knows who are really his. Some may look saved on the outside and be old bones dead in sin on the inside while some may be saved and have come out of deep sin and God is still continuing to clean them up. So, they may not look so hot to you but God he sees their heart and how far he has brought them.
So yes, indeed, those who endure to the end will be saved! Those who really belong to God will endure all things in their lives and continue to stay true to Jesus. Now that is fruit that will truly remain for all eternally!
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. John 3:3-8
The scriptures tell us that without the remission of blood there is no remission of sins. Let’s find out what exactly this means. According to the Bible, remission means in Greek, aphesis, which is forgiveness, deliverance and liberty. In other words, in order to have deliverance which is freedom from bondage or imprisonment, and forgiveness which is , pardoning of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed), BLOOD MUST BE SHED.
Under the law, a life must be given up for a life. The soul that sins shall die. Therefore, either you die or else blood is shed for your remission. A sinner cannot die for a sinner because both would end up in hell any way. This is why the bloodshed must not be tainted with sin from the soul who shed it. God knew this and that is why he provided the perfect sacrifice for us. Jesus, who was without sin, gave his life up for the sinner.
There is one more thing. In order to receive this remission, one must repent. Scriptures tell us in Mark 1:4 that John and Jesus (Luke 24:27) preached a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. In other words, one must turn from any and all activity that excludes faith in the blood for remission of sins and turn toward God and trusting in his remission of blood through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Scriptures plainly tell us that it is FAITH IN THE BLOOD that brings salvation, to be saved from the penalty of sin. PERIOD!!! NOTHING ELSE!! NOTHING ADDED.
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God. Romans 3:25
Paul tells us the same thing. He says that under the law all are condemned to die eternally because of sin unless they turn to Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins. Read all of Romans chapter 3.
In a nut shell I will simplify Paul’s message.
. All are sinners and condemned to die eternally.
- Right standing with God comes only through faith in Jesus Christ as the remitter of sins.
- To be justified (just as if you had never sinned) comes as a free gift through the redemption provided by Jesus Christ.
- God gave Jesus as propitiation (appeasing the law of God) through FAITH IN HIS BLOOD for the remission of sins.
- No one can boast that they earned their salvation by any works of the law whatsoever.
- The law of God is established through faith in the blood of Jesus or in other words the blood of Jesus has fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the law.
In conclusion, remission from sins comes by FAITH IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS ALONE without the works of the law. Read the book of Galatians, for confirmation, because Paul specifically says that if you trust any other message then you are trusting in a false message that will result in you dying for your sins, and spending eternity separated from God, in everlasting punishment. So, make sure that you are really saved by calling on God to forgive you from all your sins based on faith (trusting in) the blood of Jesus Christ for your remission.
Many people who claim to be Christians base their belief upon assenting to the fact that Jesus Christ existed and died and rose again from the dead BUT scriptures tell us that even the devil believes this so what exactly does it mean to be saved from sin and become the recipient of eternal life? According to the Bible under the law if you sinned you had to bring a sacrifice of the death of certain animals and the bloodshed brought you remission of your sin. This was because the wages of sin is death. Someone innocent had to pay the price for your sin, if not you then a substitute for you, on your behalf. The blood that was shed satisfied the requirements of the law of God; a life for a life.
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:22
The Bible tells us that Jesus shed his blood on our behalf. In order to have this sacrifice applied to us we must believe in what Jesus did and not just who he was. You can believe in the trinity, the deity of Christ, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and still not be saved. What needs to happen in order for salvation to occur is that you must have a revelation of the shed blood of Jesus and faith in his blood to cleanse you from sin and keep you cleansed from sin.
Paul asserts that the Galatians believed in Jesus according to the law but not in grace. In other words the Galatians believed in the death and resurrection and even deity of Jesus Christ BUT they did not have faith in the blood of Jesus to save them completely. They wanted to remain under the law and be saved too but it does not work that way. The Bible specifically says that salvation is attained by having FAITH IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST. This means that we must believe that the blood of Jesus Christ alone atones for sin, without adding anything to it.
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God Romans 3:25
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14
If you are trusting in your good deeds, the works of the law, morality, ethics, to save you as well as believing in who Jesus is then you have no salvation. In order to be saved you must completely and totally have faith in the blood of Jesus alone to save you AND to keep you saved. Let me show you exactly why this is so.
First of all faith in the blood of Jesus alone JUSTIFIES. This means to be declared righteous or in right standing before God. Works of any kind even keeping the Ten Commandments will not justify you. (Not that any could keep them in their entirety in thought and deed anyway)
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Romans 5:9
The blood of Jesus washes and cleanses from our sins, continually. In other words instead of running to the of sacrificial system and killing an animal sacrifice every time we blow it, we can confess the sin to Jesus ask for the help of his Holy Spirit in giving you victory over the sin and he will forgive and cleanse. He died once for sin. IT IS FINNISHED!
Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood Rev. 1:5
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
Salvation is attainted through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ alone apart from the deeds of the law. In other words when we have faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ, God saves us from his wrath and from hell fire. He gives us eternal life based on his sacrificial gift without adding anything to it. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Romans 5:9
Not only does faith in the blood of Jesus save you but faith in the blood of Jesus will also give you victory over sin and the devil! This is because the blood of Jesus is continually working on our behalf. What was accomplished at Calvary is a onetime event BUT that event is still working on our behalf to sanctify us! How? The blood of Jesus allows us continual access to God’s throne to receive from him all the help we need to live a life that pleases him in this earth!
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, Hebrews 10:19 And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, Revelation 1:5
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Revelation 12:11
Let us take a look at the characters in the New Testament who fell away from God.
Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus.
Do scriptures tell us that Judas was a real believer? No! In fact Jesus said that he was a thief. He loved money! He was greedy for gain like some believers today that follow Jesus just to get “blessed” with money. Judas Iscariot betrayed the Lord with a kiss. What does this tell you? That he was two faced! Judas could sit and sup with Jesus and watch all the miracles but all he had on his mind was the money that could be made from hanging around Jesus!
“No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Mathew 6:24
Demas who left Paul.
Was this guy a real Christian? NO! Demas loved this present world and what does the bible say about those who love the world? That God’s love is not in him or in other words he is not saved.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:10
Hymenaeus and Alexander
Paul says that they were blasphemers. Are blasphemers true Christians? I don’t think so! When one teaches things contrary to scriptures then they are blaspheming. They were turned over to Satan because they did not love the truth. What does the Bible say about those who do not love the truth? They don’t have the truth!
“And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” 2 Thessalonians 2:10
Who does the Bible say are preserved and kept until the end? The true born again Christian and God knows who are really his. Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about the preserving of the saints.
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. Jude 1:1, 2
Preserved in the Greek is tereo which means to attend to carefully, take care of, guard, keep safe, protect.
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. I Thessalonians .” 5:23
Sanctified in the Greek is hagiazō –consecrated and set apart for God.
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. Jude 1:24,
Is able in the Greek is- dynamai- to be capable, strong and powerful
Keep in the Greek is – phylassō – to guard a person (or thing) that he may remain safe, to guard from being lost or perishing, to keep from being snatched away, preserve safe and unimpaired
From falling in the Greek- aptaistos – exempt from falling
To present you in the Greek is – histēmi- to cause or make to stand, to place, put, set, to make firm, fix establish
Faultless in the Greek is – amōmos- morally: without blemish, faultless, unblameable
Before the presence in the Greek is- katenōpion- before God as judge
of his- glory in the Greek is – doxa- opinion, judgment, view, magnificence, excellence, preeminence, dignity, grace
So as you can see brethren, those who fall away from Jesus are those who are not saved in the first place. Those who are born of God overcome the world and the wicked one cannot touch them for God preserves them and keeps them from falling even unto the end!
“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4
“We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.” 1 John 5:18
The “carnal Christian” doctrine is a false doctrine. The word for carnal in the Greek is sarkikos and this means having the depraved fleshy unregenerate worldly sin fallen nature.
The scriptures say that WE ARE NOT IN THE FLESH BUT IN THE SPIRIT IF SO BE THAT THE SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLS IN YOU. Romans 8:9
You are either saved or you are not. John says that if we live in sin then we do not have God’s Spirit. Those who live like the devil belong to the devil. A true Christian hates sin and is constantly yielding to the Holy Spirit to transform him/her day by day into the image of Jesus Christ.
The word “back slider” is not in the New Testament at all! Backslider was a word for Israel who could NOT keep the law and fell away from God. Israel was not born again! True Christians are born again.
“The backslidden in heart is filled with his own ways. Proverbs 14:14
This is a hearer of the word but not a doer! The natural heart condition of the unregenerate is one of turning aside from God, backslid from its maker. Like apostate Israel, it is in need of divine intervention in order to be saved Ps. 80: 14-21
“‘If you return, O Israel’, says the Lord, ‘Return to Me; and if you will put away your abominations out of My sight, you shall not be moved’…For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: ‘Break up your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your hearts, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest My fury come forth like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it, because of the evil of your doings” Jeremiah 4:1-4
The uncircumcised in heart is the unregenerate heart.
. “…they are not all Israel who are Israel” Romans 2:9
“But he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit.” Romans 9:6
The unfaithful servants and 5 virgins were not true believers. The 5 virgins had lamps, they had the word of God, they heard the good news but they had no oil. They did not have the Holy Spirit and one must have the Holy Spirit to be saved. These 5 were a part of the apostate church. Those who claimed to be saved but are not . These have the lamp, the letter of the word, but not the Holy Spirit in them
Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother” 1 John 37: 7-10
“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us” 1 John 2:19
A true Christian is not like the false disciples who left Jesus because they did not believe he was who he said he was, “…went back and walked with Him no more”
The true Christian says, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God” John 6:66
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things THAT ACCOMPANY SALVATION, though we thus speak.
Go on to verse 17 of this chapter…
Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
The word “partake” in this verse is to receive of the Holy Spirit such as a miracle, healing, an answer to prayer. (Notice how this verse does not say regenerated by the Holy Spirit.)
The Greek word in this verse for “Partake” metochos which means to share in benefits of an association with but not necessarily to be born of the Holy Spirit. While all Christians do partake of the Holy Spirit not all who partake of the Holy Spirit are Christians. The Greek word translated “partakers” can mean from a deep and abiding commitment to a loose knowledge of someone or something.
Since it is not made perfectly clear to us we must therefore rely on other scriptures. We must always compare scriptures with scriptures in rightly dividing the truth. Notice how these in this scripture bare thorns and briers.
Jesus said that a corrupt tree bares corrupt fruit but a good tree CANNOT bring forth bad fruit. A tree bears fruit of its own kind. “…a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:43-45
If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32
“What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:21-23
The Bible tells us that we are new creatures in Jesus Christ and are predestined to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.” Romans 8:29
The fruit of the Spirit in a Christian’s life is proof of having received Jesus Christ and being born again.
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.” Matthew 7:16-20
“Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” Matthew 21:43-44
“Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance…” Luke 3:7-8
“For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end. “Hebrews 3:14
Who is he that turns back to perdition and has no confidence in the salvation of Jesus Christ? Those who partook of the things of God but did not become born again and had no fellowship with the Holy Spirit, they fell away because there was no truth in them, for as scriptures declare, “Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.” John 18:37
Can a true Christian loose salvation? NO! Those who turn back to perdition bearing bad fruit are hearers. When persecution or tribulation comes because of the word of God’s sake these hearers fall back because they tasted of the Holy Spirit’s good things to come but were never born again of the Holy Spirit. They did not receive the divine nature of God and were not made heirs of Jesus Christ’s righteousness.
