Jesus said in his word that he did not want us to “take thought” for our life. That means in the Greek, Merimna, which means to be anxious, troubled, worried, prompting one’s interest, looking out for, caring a lot about. Jesus knew that by our taking thought we can become mentally and emotionally sick. Science reveals that excessive worry causes stress and can make us physically and mentally sick.
The root of much of emotional anxiety and depression is caused by worry. This is why Jesus said not to worry. He also gave us a remedy for worry. Jesus said, to understand that you cannot make one hair black or white, or in other words, you do not have the power to change circumstances, situations or people. This is the first step to healing, recognizing that you are powerless to do much of anything in this world’s trials and tribulations, at least anything that will transform your heart or give you the miracle that you need.
Now that we have come to this conclusion: and have surrendered to the Lord by not striving and fretting, what now? Jesus goes on to say, “Have faith in God”. Trust him. Really all faith is, is trust. That’s the real meaning. Pistis- trust in, rely upon and cling to.
Do we have a part to play in this place of trust? YES! Not only do we cast down worry, fear, and anxiety, BUT we take thought in a different direction. Let me show you what the word says.
In Malachi, God says that he revealed himself to those who thought on him. Read it for yourself. Also, in Acts 10:19, Peter was mediating or thinking about what God showed him and as he did the Spirit of God spoke to him. We can see this happening throughout scripture. This is why scriptures tell us to think on good, lovely, pure things etc. What has all these qualities but the word of God, the Bible? As we mediate or think on God and what he says in his word, he will show up! When God shows up, miracles happen!
1 Corinthians 3:13, tells us to stop thinking childish things, or in other words stop thinking like a carnal person who has a carnal mind. God wants to renew our mind with the word of God so we think God thoughts! Faith comes by hearing God speak and this hearing ability comes from the word of God. It is important to read the word and mediate on in, think about it!
Let the Lord speak to you through it! Then when you have his word in your heart you will not worry, sin or be in fear. Why? Because God will show up in your life and do miracles for you! The Lord will only answer prayers that line up with his word. Find out all his promises which are yes and amen and then pray them, mediate on them so God can give you revelation for your circumstance.
Take no thought for your life! Don’t worry, fret or be in fear! The Lord has promised and he is faithful to perform his promises. The storm can rage but we trust in the God who calms the storm! No weapon that is formed against us will prosper! God said it! He cannot lie.
My next point is, wait on the Lord. We always want everything now. Our fast paced society makes us demand it BUT God does not work that way. He does things according to his timing and his ways and his plan and so we must be patient. Patience is a fruit of the Spirit and a godly attribute. Who ever heard of a ring popping out of the silversmith pot? Things take time and good things are worth waiting for! God is working behind the scenes so we must trust him in bringing the victory according to his timing.
My last point, be thankful! Sometimes we must learn this the hard way; I know I have had to. Until we can be content in our situation, we will wander around in limbo, just like the Israelites in the wilderness. There is always someone worse off than us, keep that in mind next time you are tempted to complain.
God loves a grateful heart. Now that does not mean that God does not want to promote you but until we can be appreciative of what we have we will never be given more. Grumblers and complainers are taking thought to their life to the point of making everyone else around them miserable! Be thankful and the Lord will bless you with more in his time.
So, take no thought for your life! Take thought for the word of God! Then you will be successful in all the Lord has called you to do!
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
