Many times we read this scripture, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” KJV 2 Timothy 1:7, without fully understanding what it really means. I for one, love to search deeper into the word of God to find its true treasures and then I like to share what I find.
First of all we need to realize that fear can be a negative emotion which can bind us up in helplessness. I know many look at fear in this verse as being a demonic force but that is not necessarily so. The word for “spirit” in this verse is defined as pneuma in the Greek which means: a spirit, i.e. a simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding, and acting. (Strong’s concordance).
Now that may or may not be an evil spirit but just so you know, any negative emotion in operation usually has a demonic influence as well because the devils like to take advantage of our weakness but let’s look at it from a natural perspective. If we do then we can also at the same time give the devil his walking papers.
The dictionary defines fear as , an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
So when we fear we actually believe that something is going to cause us harm in some way. As a Christian we need to realize that our very lives are in God’s hands and this should be comforting but many times we fear because we do not trust God in a given situation. Now I am not here to condemn anyone for this because if we are honest with ourselves we will admit that we all have fear in some area. God does not condemn us either but wants to help us. He is on our side!
How many of us would trust someone so much that we would just fall from a building and let that person catch us? I for one have a problem trusting anyone so no not me! Do I look like an idiot? Well, God understands this, so those people who condemn you for having little faith can just take a hike! Trust is earned! God wants to show he is strong on our behalf! He even says this in his word! “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9
Now let’s get back to the verse we are examining. God has not given us a “spirit of fear “or in other Bible versions it is translated timidity, not having enough faith, bottom line. But guess what? God has given us a solution and that solution is his Holy Spirit! He has given us the Spirit of love and power and a sound mind. Let us examine what the Lord uses to conquer fear.
The Holy Spirit which is love is our answer to the problem of fear….agapē- affection, good will, love, benevolence, brotherly love. So in other words God wants to pour his love on us. The Bible says that perfect love casts out fear. 1 John 4:18
When fear comes ask the Holy Spirit to pour his love on you! Show he is strong for you! Prove his love and devotion. He wants to do that! Contrary to what some people preach that we should have blind faith in God the scriptures clearly teach us that God demonstrates his love to us.
The bible is loaded with God giving evidences! He proved himself to Thomas! He did not condemn him but demonstrated his love and said (my paraphrase)”now see her, I am who I say I am, so don’t be afraid!” And then poof the fear went and Thomas went on to be a great man of God!
God does not get glory out of some one pretending to have faith when they don’t! Just admit your fear and God will help you!
God will also give you his power, (dynamis) to overcome fear! This means that he will do a miracle for you by giving you his strength and ability to overcome fear! God will also by his Holy Spirit give you hissōphronismos, self control. So instead of freaking out you will be able to handle the situation with appropriate thinking. In other words you will be able to deal with the fear in a proper perspective.
Instead of fear binding you, you will be able to look at the problem with the love and power of the Holy Spirit and overcome.
Romans 5:5 tells us that God’s love is poured into our hearts by his Holy Spirit and therefore fear will be cast out. All that we have to do is call out to the Lord in times of trouble and he will be there to do all that he has promised. God will prove himself trust worthy time and time again and then you will learn to trust him because he demonstrates his love! That is he clearly show the existence or truth of (something) by giving proof or evidence.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. “Romans 5:8 (commendeth -Synistēmi- to demonstrate, to show, prove, establish, exhibit)
In closing let me leave you with this, fear brings torment and we know that torment is not from God and so when we fear we are not made perfect in God’s love and it is doubtful that we ever will be until we reach heaven but the Lord has made a way for us to deal with all fear and that is through the love, power, and self control that he gives us through his Holy Spirit! All we have to do is ask him! God wants to demonstrate to you his ability to be strong for you in all situations!
