Salvation is a divine work of God. Man does not cooperate with God in his own salvation. God alone determines who shall be saved, and God alone accomplishes the work of salvation.
Salvation is of the Lord. The will to come to Christ is the outcome of God’s unconditional, free and Sovereign election.
God determines Sovereignly who shall be saved, and who shall not be saved. Salvation is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy and according to His Sovereign good pleasure, God is merciful to whom He will be merciful, and whom He will He hardeneth.
Gods Sovereignty is not limited by the will of man. God performs his will and does not need to depend on man. Yes, indeed he uses vessels meet for his use refined in the fire but these vessels are also a divine work of God. Prepared for glory. Only through the Sovereign, irresistible grace of God in Christ, that draws the sinner does he give eyes to see and ears to hear, and a heart to desire after Him. So that no flesh will ever glory in His presence! We have nothing to boast in…no works of any kind. Just to be blessed by God’s mercy to the undeserving sinner. That is why it is called AMAZING GRACE !
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him.
And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
The term “whosoever” has been interpreted by some to mean that a person can accept Christ simply if they so chooseto do so and just say a sinner’s prayer and they are saved. However, the word “whosoever” is the Greek word “pas” which is used about 1,200 times in the New Testament.
The term simply translated means “each, all, everyone, every.” There is absolutely no implication in the word “pas” of “anytime, anywhere, or choice.” This word does not endorse any idea of a person having a free will to make a choice for his salvation.
There is no sinner that is willing to come to Jesus without the power of the holy Spirit enabling him. Only those that God calls are able to come to God. Man’s nature is sinful and in enmity with God according to scripture. He does not seek after God for God is not in his thoughts. He by nature hates the gospel and cannot will to come to the truth. Only God can set the captives free from Satan’s dominion.Salvation is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy, Rom. 9:16
The will to come to Jesus is the fruit of the drawing of the Father. And the number of the “whosoever will” is therefore limited to those whom it pleases the Father to give to Christ, to give them a new heart, and to call them out of darkness into His marvelous light. And preceding this drawing of the Father, there is no saving activity on the part of the sinner whatsoever.
Grace is granted to a man by faith and this faith comes by hearing and being given ears to hear from God’s word and therefore even faith is a divine attribute.
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Biblical repentance, in relation to salvation, is changing your mind from rejection of Christ, to faith in Christ. Repentance is not a work we do to earn salvation. No one can repent and come to God unless God draws that person to Him. Repentance is a gift granted by God to the sinner.
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
2 Timothy 2:25
In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth. And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins
The sinner is dead in trespasses and sins.
Eph.2:1 “The thoughts and intents of his heart are only evil continually.” (Gen.6:5) He is the slave of sin (John 8:34), the servant of the devil, (Eph.2:2).
The only way a person can desire the things of the Lord is if God opens their spiritual understanding. A dead man cannot raise himself from the dead nor do anything except remain dead. When God resurrects us with our resurrected spirits, we then will have a desire for the things of the Lord since we are called to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
The Bible does not teach synergism which is the belief that salvation is a cooperative effort between God and man,but rather that salvation is an act of God. Salvation is not found in ones own self. Man has no ability whatsoever to save himself. Unregenerated man is dead in his sins, blind to the gospel, in enmity(having a deep hatred) with God, not subject to God’s will and never can be. Without God’s Soverign grace through faith in Christ given to him by the Father, man would die in his sins and be eternally lost.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.
All that the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and he that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
